Transform Your Fleet with WAZIP!

The Washington Zero-Emission Incentive Program (WAZIP) is a new statewide voucher incentive program designed to make it easier and more affordable for Washington businesses to buy zero-emission commercial vehicles and equipment. Program guidelines are now available in the WAZIP Implementation Manual (IM).

On our 2023 study mission to California, we saw firsthand how point-of-sale voucher programs accelerate fleet adoption by lowering upfront costs and making it easier for dealers and manufacturers to deliver clean trucks to customers. That’s why we’re thrilled to see WAZIP come to Washington state!

Visit the WAZIP website to find out what vehicles and equipment will be eligible for incentives and how the program will work. A detailed online implementation manual allows interested parties to learn more about the program including guidelines, eligibility and funding rules.

Stay in touch so you don’t miss out—voucher requests will go live in April! Join the WAZIP email list to receive important announcements and updates sent straight to your inbox. The sign-up form is on the WAZIP website.

The Power Grid Takes Center Stage at the Super Bowl

There was a lot to love about Super Bowl LX: First and foremost our Seattle Seahawks taking home the Vince Lombardi Trophy! As die-hard Seahawks fans we could not be happier, and hope all of you had a chance to celebrate and enjoy the festivities!

Second, Bad Bunny put on an incredible halftime show which, beyond offering a positive, affirming vision of our country, spotlighted something energy nerds like us love to discuss: The power grid!

At Clean & Prosperous, we prefer the suffocating Seahawks Dark Side defense to the prolonged blackouts that impact Puerto Rico. Some context from Scientific American: “In 2017 Hurricane Maria destroyed 80 percent of the island’s transmission and distribution lines, and this led to months-long power outages. In 2022 Hurricane Fiona again knocked out power for more than 80 percent of the island’s residents. Widespread blackouts have become a regular feature of life in Puerto Rico. There [sic] “electricity problems are an everyday problem,” said Max Lainfiesta, then a member of the Islands Energy Program at the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Institute, to Scientific American in 2022.”

We’d be remiss not to recognize one of our previous study mission participants, Edwin Wanji of Sphere Solar, who took matters into his own hands by building a solar micro grid for the Escuela Ecológica Niños Uniendo al Mundo, an environmental school specializing in ecology in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Clean & Prosperous Featured in the Northwest Seaport Alliance Newsletter!

We’re grateful to our friends at the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) for featuring us in their Clean Air Quarterly newsletter! From the newsletter:

What type of challenges have you encountered with the transition to electric vehicles, particularly in the heavy-duty sector?

First, it is clear that businesses in Washington state want to make this transition. In terms of challenges, it is a difficult time to be in this industry. There is a reduction in freight demand, the expiration of federal incentives, and uncertainty around how things like tariffs can impact a business’s bottom line.

The upfront costs of medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles are significant, particularly around Class 8 vehicles. Businesses need vouchers, and they need vouchers at a level that will make a meaningful impact on vehicle prices.

We also know that lack of charging infrastructure is a huge barrier, along with uncertainty around new technologies and a lack of understanding or experience on how to integrate electric vehicles into an organization’s operations. Fortunately, the infrastructure is being built right now. It is just a matter of making sure that people know that infrastructure exists, that more is coming, and connecting people with the information they need to make the best choice for their business.

The higher insurance costs for the heavy-duty end of the electric vehicle spectrum can also be a deterrent for some. We expect, however, that as more vehicles hit the road and the technology is more proven, insurance costs will come down.
