Bipartisan Organizing May Save Energy Star
You may have missed some good news for bipartisan clean energy organizing over the weekend: New reporting details how the federal government is quietly backing away from its plan to eliminate Energy Star.
This comes after a bipartisan coalition across climate, clean energy, business/trade groups, and elected officials vocalized significant opposition to the proposed ending of the Energy Star program.
Energy Star, created in 1992, helps consumers shop for more energy efficient appliances, including air conditioners, heat pumps, and refrigerators. The Washington State Department of Commerce is currently accepting applications from third-party administrators to provide rebates to low- and moderate-income households, small businesses, and adult family homes to install high-efficiency electric equipment, appliances, and heat pumps.
Eligible third-party administrators include: local governments, Washington state agencies, tribal governments, housing authorities, retail electric utilities, community action agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Applications are due February 5, 2026 at 4 p.m. and Commerce is hosting an information session on November 12, 2025 at 12 p.m.
Buildings make up the second-largest share of greenhouse gas emissions in Washington state at nearly 25 percent. Reducing building emissions by increasing the adoption of heat pumps and other energy efficient technologies is a crucial strategy to meet our decarbonization goals.
