A Message From Our Executive Director

After five years at the helm, I will be stepping down as Executive Director of Clean & Prosperous after the selection of a new leader and a smooth transition to their tenure. My experience guiding the staff, board and mission of Clean & Prosperous has been one of the great honors of my life, and before I pass the baton, I want to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve built together and the work that lies ahead.

Since our inception, Clean & Prosperous has brought a mission-driven entrepreneurial mindset to tackling the defining issue of our era: The climate crisis. Our founder, the late David Giuliani, embodied this spirit when he turned his focus to the urgent challenge of climate change, bringing together leaders from across sectors and ideologies to pursue pragmatic, data-driven solutions.

After we passed the Climate Commitment Act (CCA) in 2021, David’s health was declining, and he passed me the baton to lead the organization for an interim period as we continued to grow and strengthen Washington’s climate leadership.

I could not be more proud of the work we’ve accomplished at Clean & Prosperous over these past five years.

We’ve remained steadfast in our commitment to the CCA, helping defend the landmark policy at the ballot box. We launched the single most comprehensive resource showing how CCA funding is supporting communities across the state. And we have been staunch advocates for linkage, and will soon see Washington join the largest subnational carbon market in the world.

Beyond the CCA, Clean & Prosperous is accelerating Washington’s transition to cleaner, more affordable transportation options. We are helping bring more than 5,000 new charging ports online across our state through the Washington Electric Vehicle Charging Program. And we’ve seen the fruits of our 2022 study mission to California come to bear with the launch of WAZIP, a $112 million point-of-sale voucher program helping medium- and heavy-duty fleets switch to zero-emission vehicles.

Alongside this work, Clean & Prosperous continues to host unparalleled convenings that allow climate and clean energy leaders to learn from experts, build partnerships, and bring concrete ideas and programs back to Washington state. From study missions to our own backyard, to the capital of the European Union, to unlikely jurisdictions like Texas, we consistently spur meaningful change and actionable ideas.

But the work is far from over. Washington has established some of the most significant climate goals in the country, yet we are dead last in renewable energy growth. It’s clear that our ambition and implementation are misaligned, and at Clean & Prosperous, we’re committed to righting that ship through our Build Sustainable High Impact Infrastructure Together initiative.

Through it all, the team at Clean & Prosperous has operated with humility, humor, and a commitment to what works. That’s probably why my interim period turned into five years.

After I finish my role as Executive Director of Clean & Prosperous, I’ll still be involved with the organization – and with the climate and clean energy work in Washington. But the time to pass the baton to the next generation of climate leaders is now.

I always say I have the honor of serving as the Executive Director of Clean & Prosperous, and I truly mean it. Working with this team, our board, and our partners has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life. I’m biased, but I think this is the best job in Washington state, and I cannot wait to see how the organization continues to grow and lead in the coming years under the guidance of a new leader.

Our board of directors is leading the search for Clean & Prosperous’s next Executive Director, with support from Clover Search Works. You can expect to hear more about the search in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I’ll be working closely with the board and our team to ensure a smooth transition.
